Should You Replace Your Plumbing Vent Boot?

There are a lot of things in your house that you don’t think about until there is something wrong with it. Your plumbing vent boot is often one of those things. As long as it’s on your roof, doing its thing, you don’t think twice about it, if at all. However, when there is something wrong with your vent boot, you notice it right away. At least, you’ll notice that something is wrong, anyway, even if you don’t know exactly what it is.

Here are four signs that mean it’s time to replace your plumbing vent boot.

Leaky Drains

Wastewater is supposed to go down your drains and away, never to be seen again. If that wastewater is coming back up your drains, that means something is blocking the drain. Drains leak when the pressure in your pipes isn’t released properly and pushes the water back up. When this happens, one of the first things you should do is check the vent for blockages.

Debris Around the Plumbing Vent Boot

Depending on where you live, a lot of leaves may have just fallen onto your roof. If leaves or other debris have settled around your vent boot, you should clear it away before it causes other problems. Some of those problems are worse than a leaky drain. If you can clear away the debris, you can keep your current vent boot. But if there’s gunk in there that you can’t get out, your best bet is to take it off and get yourself a new one from Kozy Kollar.

Attic Leaks

There are several reasons why you could have leaks in your attic, and of them is damage to your plumbing vent boot. High winds or fallen branches can move your vent boot and create a gap in your roof that will leak. If the foam insulation gets wet, that can also cause a leak in your attic. You may be able to repair the seal, but you might need a new vent boot.

Sewage Smells

It’s a smell that should never be inside your home, and it’s pretty unmistakable. If you can smell sewage in your house, that’s a sign the vent is blocked. As soon as you detect that smell, you should check your vent boot for blockages or signs of damage.
